Meet Our Teachers

All of our Musik Haus teachers have been carefully selected. They have studied and continue to study and learn better, and more enjoyable ways to teach music. Many of them are professional musicians who play and entertain personally, with worship groups, in bands, orchestras, symphonies and concerts.

FRANK HADDAS
Drums | Percussion

"My first drum lesson was 60 years ago. I love teaching music because I believe you should pass on a gift. I received a gift many years ago; it was the gift of music. I have played in various groups including orchestras, brass bands, rhythm and blues bands, rock bands, and jazz bands. Currently I play with the Northern Michigan Brass Band, the Gaylord Orchestra, the Gaylord Band and the group at church."

SALLY HANES
Piano

Sally began learning the piano at a young age. Classically trained, she has been teaching for 22 years. She is the music director for her local church and plays for various events throughout Northern Michigan. Sally believes that learning to play a musical instrument at any age is a gift for a lifetime.

GARY KERSTING
Guitar

Gary has been teaching fingerstyle guitar for more than 20 years. He plays regularly with several worship teams in the Petoskey and Charlevoix area.

JOHN KIRBY
Guitar

John plays a variety of music and has been in several bands. He has taught guitar for too many years to count. John teaches his students the kind of music they enjoy and incorporates music theory into the lessons to get them to where they want to eventually be in their music life.

MARY JANE KIRBY
Accordion | Keyboard | Guitar | Mandolin | Ukulele

Mary Jane loves teaching music. She has been giving lessons for over 55 years and enjoys learning a new instrument every year. She has years of experience playing in church and several bands.

JUDY MAGSIG
Violin | Viola | Cello | Mandolin | Dulcimer | Piano | Recorder

Judy received her bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Music from Alma College. She is an accomplished musician and has played in orchestras and symphonies all over Northern Michigan. While having taught music for over 40 years she tells us she loves watching children and seeing their faces shine when they master a skill.

"My philosophy is anybody can learn an instrument if they really want to. They may not become artists at it but they have a right to take lessons to help them learn a skill that will make them happy even if they only play for themselves."

AL SCOTT
Piano | Vocal | Music Theory

Al's vocal lessons include emphasis on Voice Training and Artistry, and natural sound production with reliable pitch and projection. His piano lessons include emphasis on style, posture, technique, and sight-reading. He also has developed and taught multi-grade-level workshops in Music Theory & Composition, and is available for advanced tutoring to prepare high school students for the AP college music entrance exam.

Al has a background in opera, musical theater, chorale, and popular music. He is an active member of Music Teachers Association national, Michigan, and local chapters.
